A ground-up concept for an English-style barn with a mid century modern interior finish and tropical outdoor space.

This home was designed for bachelors, young couples and retirees looking to downsize and stylise alike…

About this concept…

This home was designed to read as a modern take on an English-style barn conversion. While the interior and courtyard outdoor spaces have a warm, mid-century modern + tropical theme, we wanted the structure to fit in and compliment its environment — the English countryside.

This concept property explores a contemporary interpretation of the traditional English barn conversion, designed to sit comfortably within the rural character of the English countryside while offering a distinctly modern living experience. Rather than replicating a historic barn, the design abstracts familiar agricultural forms and materials into a refined architectural language that feels both rooted in place and forward-looking.

Externally, the building draws inspiration from the simple massing and robust materiality of vernacular farm structures. A long linear form, pitched roof, exposed brickwork, and restrained openings create a silhouette that feels familiar within its landscape context. The use of warm red brick and clay roof tiles references traditional rural architecture, while crisp black detailing and clean contemporary lines establish a clear modern identity. The result is a building that complements its surroundings without resorting to pastiche.

Internally, the design shifts in character to create a warm and inviting retreat inspired by Mid-Century Modern principles. Rich timber finishes, low-profile furniture, textured materials, and carefully controlled lighting create a sense of comfort and sophistication throughout the home. Open-plan living spaces encourage fluid movement between cooking, dining, and relaxation, while large glazed openings connect the interior to the surrounding courtyard gardens.

A key driver of the project is the contrast between the understated exterior and the vibrant atmosphere within. Tropical planting is introduced throughout the courtyard spaces and internal views, creating moments of lush greenery that soften the architecture and enhance the sense of sanctuary. These enclosed outdoor rooms bring natural light deep into the plan while offering privacy, shelter, and a strong visual connection to nature.

The courtyard spaces function as extensions of the interior, blurring the boundary between inside and outside. Inspired by tropical resort environments yet adapted for a temperate climate, they provide intimate areas for relaxation, dining, and contemplation. The combination of warm timber tones, dark architectural accents, natural stone, and abundant planting creates a layered sensory experience that feels both grounded and exotic.

This project demonstrates how traditional rural forms can be reinterpreted through a contemporary lens, balancing contextual sensitivity with modern lifestyle aspirations. The outcome is a home that feels familiar from afar yet reveals a rich, warm, and unexpectedly tropical character within—a modern barn conversion designed for contemporary countryside living.
